Frequently Asked Questions
Do solar panels work in the winter?
The systems installed by SolarTech Systems are designed for UK climate and work efficiently all year round.

How long is the payback period on a solar hot water system?
The payback period is dependent on how much energy bills rise in the future. The average gas bill has nearly doubled in three years and electricity has risen by sixty per cent. Fossils fuels are running out, thus the long term trend can only be a continued rise in energy bills.

I have a combi boiler, can I still have a solar hot water system?
Yes - however, a solar hot water system does require water storage. The most common locations for a new cylinder are in a old airing cupboard or up in your loft.

Do you need planning permission?
Under Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995, Solar panels are usually considered a permitted development and permission is not normally needed. If you live in a conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty permission may be required depending on the site of the collectors. More information is available on the Energy Saving Trust’s website >

Can you install on listed buildings?
Yes, you can install systems on grade 1 and 2 listed buildings. It is important to look for an inconspicuous site.

How much does it cost?
Because each system is unique to the property, the price will depend on many aspects, such as position of collectors, size of cylinder, number of occupants.

Will I be without hot water during the installation?
Only for a short time whilst the hot water cylinder is changed over. You will not be without hot water overnight.

How do I get a FREE no obligation quote?

Can I upgrade my cylinder to a unvented / fully pressurised type of cylinder?
Yes SolarTech Systems are qualified and registered with Gas Safe to install unvented cylinders.See accreditations >

Can I upgrade my existing boiler for a new fuel efficent gas condensing boiler?
Yes SolarTech Systems are qualified and registered with Gas Safe to install Gas boilers. See accreditations >

How long will it take to install
Depending on the system design, most installations take on average around two-three days to complete.

Do solar panels make your house look unsightly?
Today's panels can be flush mounted on the roof and from a distance look like a skylight or Velux window.

Does it provide electricity?
Our collectors do not provide electricity but do supply up to 70% of your year round hot water needs. Systems such as photovoltaic (PV) are used to provide electricity.

Does it provide central heating?
This is not usually possible - mainly because you want the heat during winter months when there is least sunlight available.

How long does it last?
You could expect our system to be working 20-25 years from the installation date.

Guarantee?
We offer a full parts and labour warranty for 3 years.
Our collectors have separate guarantees.
